Watermelon & Fresh Fruit Basket

Recipe

A Watermelon Basket is perfect for an outdoor event. The fruit can sit out on the serving table and always looks so festive. Besides, family and friends can nibble on it the whole time. My mother used to make watermelon baskets for summer events and as a kid, I was always amazed at how she could carve a basket out of an entire watermelon and fill it with fruit!

1 large seedless watermelon - for the basket

For the rest of the fruit, mix and match as you see fit:

cantaloupe
honeydew melon
seedless grapes
peaches
nectarines
strawberries
blueberries
raspberries
blackberries
plums
oranges
etc.

For Garnish:
Lemon, lime or orange slices, grapes, melon balls or cherries toothpicks

Tools:
Serrated knife (jack-o-lantern carving knives work well) melon baller OR simply cut the fruit into bite sized chunks

Instructions:

With a serrated knife, cut out two sides of the basket, leaving the handle in the middle. Make the handle larger than you desire it to be.

Cut out as much of the inside watermelon in large chunks that you can. Be careful not to break the handle while doing so. To scoop out the remaining watermelon clinging to the rind, I always find that its easy to get at it by scraping with the side of a soup spoon. You can also remove all of the watermelon by using a melon baller, which takes more time. Trim the handle.

Cut all fruit into evenly sized chunks. Load into Watermelon Basket and chill before serving.

Serve with toothpicks or a large serving spoon.
