After you slice the cake, put two different colored tooth picks on either side of the top layer and matching colors on the botton, when you put it back just match the tooth pick colors. Then just push the bottom layer evenly with the top layer. Ice around the cut part first, the ice the whole cake including the sliced part. You should have no problem in smoothing it out.
